Beat the Winter Blahs with Golf and Exercise

One of the things we love to tell visitors is that High Meadows Golf & Country Club is a place to play golf year round. While there may be days when the wind is cold or snow blankets the fairways, there are also plenty of days with bright blue sky and moderate temperatures that beckon you out to the course.

Playing golf during the winter is good for your game, of course, because it helps you stay in practice. But did you know there are other benefits of exercising outdoors during the winter months?

  • Soak up the Sun. The sun isn’t out as long during the winter, but it doesn’t mean it isn’t just as important. Sunlight is a good source of Vitamin D, and being out in the sun can also do things like improve your mood and lower your blood pressure.
  • Boost your Immune System. Exercise gets your blood pumping so immune cells circulate through your body more quickly, which helps them seek out and destroy infections. So get your flu shot, wash your hands often and keep up that regular exercise and maybe you’ll avoid the winter colds and flu altogether.
  • Burn excess calories. We aren’t bears, but we humans definitely have a tendency to want to hibernate during the winter. It’s easy to choose to curl up with a good book under a warm blanket or settle down in the recliner for a long weekend of football playoffs and ACC basketball games. But combine that sedentary lifestyle with the sweet treats and extra carbs of holiday parties and dinners and you’ll be packing on a few extra pounds this winter. Make sure to keep the calories off by keeping up your exercise routine.

Keep in touch with our golf pros to know the conditions of the course from day to day. Depending on the weather there might be some times when carts are discouraged, but think how much more exercise you’ll get by walking nine holes!

Golf isn’t the only way to stay active at High Meadows during the winter months. Members can also take advantage of the fitness center located in the pool house. Treadmills, a stationary bike, elliptical machines and free weights give you a variety of workout options to choose from. You can also join the yoga classes led by Denise Horne-Kaplan each Wednesday and Friday at 8 a.m. Yoga is a great way to improve your strength and flexibility.

No matter what exercise you choose, make sure you’re staying active year-round for optimal health!
